through karli, i've recently become addicted to a fabulous website called BookMooch. i may have mentioned before about my sadness that decent, cheap english-language books are a rare commodity in corsica. well BookMooch has officially solved this dilemma!
basically it's a book exchange, where the only cost to the reader is the cost of shipping a book. you list the books that you are willing to send, and for every book listed you receive .1 point. once you have accumulated enough points (1 point is enough to "mooch" a book off someone in your area, 2 points are needed to "mooch" a book from another country), you can search for books that are on your reading list and "mooch" away. the other way to earn points is when someone "mooches" a book off you. if you send it to another country you get 3 points or 1 point within your country. not sure if that all made sense, but it is explained simply on the website.
it's so easy and fun. ok, i know i'm a bit nerdy. in my first week, i have already received 2 books, have 6 books and 2 magazines on their way, and sent out 3 books with another 3 ready to mail tomorrow. i love this because i keep a list of books i want to read, and now i can actually start tackling it instead of reading anything i can get my hands on because i'm so desperate for books in english. and i can stop paying 11 or 12 euros in the summertime when the bookstores in bastia start selling english novels for the tourists again. now i wish i hadn't been donating all my books to the library. well, hopefully someone like me is getting good use out of them.
i know a number of fellow expats in france read this blog. if any of you are avid readers like me and need new material, i urge you to sign up. that way we all win as the shipping cost is less and you only need 1 point to mooch from each other. currently, there aren't that many BookMoochers in france that are offering books in english. you can easily search for books under the browse section, then by country, and then by department. i'm the only one in corse, obviously. if you do join, please comment or drop me an email.
